2014 Subaru Forester Review and Specs

The Subaru Forester will be redesigned for 2014. With the 2014 version, Subaru has taken out some of the boxiness, and created a more slanted, “faster’ windshield with small front-quarter windows behind the A-pillars and free-standing door-mounted mirrors. A gently arching roofline completes what Subaru describes as a bolder profile. Size-wise, the Forester grows from being slightly smaller than the competition to smack dab in the middle of the segment. The 2014 Forester also gains more cargo space inside. Folding the backseat opens up 74.7 cubic feet, which is 6 cubes more than before. An available power liftgate will make it easier to fill up all that space. Inside, an updated cabin offers better visibility and more space. There’s more shoulder room and the front and rear seats are an additional inch apart.

The Subaru Forester returns with the same 170-horsepower 2.5-liter flat-4 engine found in the 2013 model, but the five-speed manual and four-speed automatic are gone. Replacing them is a six-speed manual and a continuously variable transmission (CVT). Subaru expects the new six-speed to do 2 mpg better than the outgoing five-speed, while the CVT should beat the automatic by 4 mpg.

The Forester 2.0XT offers a new turbocharged 2.0-liter for those who crave a little more sport with their utility. The old hood scoop is gone, but a more muscular grille helps duct air into the engine compartment for improved cooling. Now with direct injection, the 2.0-liter can generate up to 250 hp, good enough to propel the Forester 2.0XT to 60 mph in a claimed 6.2 seconds.

The turbocharged engine is only available with a CVT, but there are two Sport modes, and shift paddles that simulate fixed gear ratios. The 2.0 XT should return 25 mpg combined, better than the turbo it replaces. As expected, all Foresters come with all-wheel drive, and Subaru has incorporated a new driver-selected mode that can enhance the Forester’s off-road ability.
